Alex Robinson

About

Alex started out working as an investigative journalist for TV strands like Dispatches and Equinox before writing and photographing travel books. He lived in Brazil for four years and won the country’s top travel award as a journalist for Editora Abril, and a National Magazine Award in the USA for his work on the Latin American edition of Departures. He now writes and photographs for UK magazines and lectures on culture and travel – in Asia.

Background

Alex’s love of Latin America started in the 1990s when he travelled overland across the Amazon during the dangerous Rondônia gold rush. He then bussed Central America and Mexico for Rough Guides and Cadogan, drove around the edge of Australia, lived in Thailand for a year and moved to São Paulo with his Brazilian wife.  While based there he became Footprint’s Brazil correspondent and a columnist for Latin America’s top travel magazine, Viagem e Turismo.

He has written guidebooks to Brazil, Belize, Spain and Portugal and written and photographed numerous articles on Latin America and Asia for top international magazines.

On the bucket list

To take the bullet train from Beijing to Lhasa, to hike in the Serra da Araça mountains in the remote Amazon, to walk around Mount Kailash and to learn Mandarin.
