Perched on the shore of Twin Lakes – just one mile from Mammoth Mountain ski resort – this historic lodge dates back to 1924 and is the epitome of rustic charm.
Guests can choose from the rooms in the main lodge or the self-catering wood cabins; all are super cosy, with embroidered bed throws and plump cushions. The views of the lake and mountainside are reason enough to visit.
Aperitifs are served every evening in the fire-lit lounge, before guests retire to supper in the Lakefront Restaurant, with its creative food and excellent service.
It’s obviously removed from the slopes, but it’s excellent value for those on a budget and a shuttle runs throughout the day, making it easy for you to get to the slopes and back. The east entrance of Yosemite National Park is a 45-minute drive – another great reason to stay.
About the resort
Of the 470 ski resorts in the USA, Mammoth Mountain has one of the longest winter seasons: it’s not unusual for it to open in November and operate until mid-June.
California’s highest lift-served peak, Mammoth balances steep double-diamond chutes and impressive snowparks with mellow beginner slopes and tree-lined cruisers.
There are some accommodation options in the car-free ski village, but many people opt to stay in hotels, inns and condos spread around the Mammoth Lakes area, just below the resort.
