Official star rating:
Founded by Robert Redford, Sundance Mountain Resort is situated on 5,000 acres of wilderness at the base of Mount Timpanogos in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. It’s the ultimate rustic mountain retreat, with the added kudos of the link to Hollywood royalty.
The mountainside cabins – which range from studios to seven-bedroom units – feature wood-planked walls and floors, exposed beams, stone-clad fireplaces and woollen blankets.
The award-winning Tree Room restaurant (housed in a cabin constructed around an actual tree) is filled with Native American art and offers a candlelit fine dining experience. Guests can expect Rocky Mountain classics like bison and steelhead trout – this is a place for those who really want a sense of wilderness alongside their skiing,
About the resort
While considerably smaller than its neighbour Park City, with just 44 trails spread across 450 acres, Sundance packs a punch. There are some easy beginner blues and green slopes accessed from Ray’s Lift in the Lower Village.
Higher up the mountain there are long, sweeping tree runs, and one of the best powder stashes in Utah: Shauna’s Secret in the Far East area.
The resort keeps the bulk of the front mountain open for night skiing four nights a week.
