Seven pools, three restaurants, two championship golf courses and a spa – this is not so much a resort as a luxury family playground, nestled in the stark desert landscapes of the Coachella Valley, only 30 minutes from Palm Springs.

The facilities are uniformly excellent, from the hard-court tennis courts (which have hosted professional tournaments) to the shimmering pool and varied programme of treatments at the Agua Serena Spa.

There’s a terrific kids’ club, the poolside cabanas come with flat-screen TVs and the enormous gym has every conceivable piece of equipment. Transfers to and from the golf courses are included in the resort fee.
