Queen Hatshepsut was one of the only women ever to rule Egypt and reigned during a golden period, and her impressive funerary temple is now one of the best-known monuments in Luxor.
Built on three terraces cut into the slopes of the Theban hills, it was mostly destroyed and reconstructed during the second half of the 20th century.
Some of the back walls and their decoration have survived and are of excellent quality.
There are several interesting and rarely-visited tombs a short walk away. Those belonging to Pabasa and Ankh Hor, both royal stewards, are among the most interesting, with great images.
Most people visit the temple as part of a guided tour. If you are travelling independently, either by taxi or bike, you are likely to visit Hatshepsut’s temple on your way to or from the Valley of the Kings.
An hour is enough to see the terraces and surviving images.
The temple is open all year round, seven days a week. It may also be open later on summer evenings.
The morning sun hits the east-facing temple, so go as early as you can. The temple tends to get crowded from mid-morning.
The West Bank gets very hot in summer (June-August), particularly in the afternoon and there is very little shade at the temple.
